Kitchen Tips and Shortcuts

Check out some of my favorite kitchen tips and shortcuts.

Everyone is on a budget and you can never have to many shortcuts to help with the budget. I hope these tips and tricks will help you squeeze more out of your dollar and keep your family budget in check. Please share some of your favorite tips with me! I would love to use them here on the web site and possibly in my next book. Check out my board on Pinterest where I share tips as well.

Butter Tips

Need butter at room temperature quickly – To bring butter or margarine to room temperature quickly, use a grater to shred it into your mixing bowl.

No mess buttered bowls – Instead of dealing with greasy fingers or wasting wax or paper towels, next time you finish a stick of butter — don’t throw the paper away. Instead, fold in half and store in a zip lock bag in the fridge. Next time you need to prepare a buttered bowl or pan, use the buttered paper and then throw it in the trash.

No mess buttering your dish – Use a sandwich bag when buttering a dish or making rice crispy treats and the mess won’t stick on your hands!

Sugar Tips

To keep sugar soft and moist – Place a slice of bread in the container and cover tightly.

To keep granulated sugar from lumping – Place a couple of saltine crackers in the container, then cover tightly.

Brown sugar caked and hard – Place in 200F oven until the sugar is dry and crumbly, then powder in a blender.

Another Brown sugar tip – For hardened brown sugar just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it back up.

Coffee Tips

Cleaning your coffee pot and cup is a breeze – Salt is great to clean your coffee cup and coffee pot. Just wet the item to be cleaned and pour in some salt. Clean by rubbing with a wet dish cloth or damp paper towel. Salt is less expensive than sugar as some have suggested and does a great job. Just be sure to rinse well after cleaning.

Weak brewed coffee – Add a little instant to the pot. It will strengthen it without changing the fresh taste.

Bitter tasting brewed coffee – Put a pinch of salt into coffee that was brewed too long.

Easy way to make coffee – Freeze left-over coffee in cubes. When you want a cup of coffee, heat a few cubes in a cup in the microwave. This is especially good when using flavored coffees.
